PROMISES TO THE FALLEN
Available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble Nineteen-year-old Private Eddie Henderson is with Alpha Company, serving in the Quang Ngai Province. His parents died in a car accident, and he has no one, except his platoon brothers: Porter, Rocky, and Professor. None are closer than he and his best friend, team leader Mitch Drexler. In the heat and jungles of Vietnam, as each man does the best he can to survive, he will learn that his only real purpose in this war is to protect the life of the soldier beside him. As “grunts,” they know only too well that their role here is little more than bait—to flush out NVA troops and the ruthless Viet Cong from the dangerous terrain, where disease and the elements can be as lethal as the enemy. Between being sent from one deadly, futile search-and-destroy mission to the next, doing all they can to protect civilians, and watching their beloved brothers fall beside them in firefights—which seem to escalate on each occasion, culminating in a significant attack on an enemy base—the men reflect on their lives and views of the war; each carries his burden. Battles are fought, friends lost, and promises made to the fallen. But when the enemy fatally wounds a platoon brother in a deadly attack, the dying soldier makes Eddie promise to fulfill a final vow… a debt of blood that could change the course of his life forever. When Eddie and his friends' tour are over, they return home to a world they barely remember. But Eddie is still trapped in the past. He has no family, no home to go back to. Just a nightmare he lives over and over again. A dark vow he made to a dying friend. And one question, burning in his mind... Will he keep his promise to his friend? No matter the cost? |

I found Promises to the Fallen extremely difficult to put down. It took me through a broad range of emotional responses as it laid bare the authentic, unadulterated experience of the American soldier in Vietnam; the good, the bad, and even the ugly. I highly recommend this book to all.
DC Gilbert - Author
A real-as-it-gets tale of life in the Vietnam war, brotherhood and revenge.
Another superb Vietnam war book by the excellent Glyn Haynie as he this time delves into fiction. A riveting, heart wrenching tale of brotherhood and revenge, amidst the backdrop of the horror of war, and the equally horrific "welcome home" awaiting these brave men.

An important book to read.
This book is fantastic. From start to finish you get to know the characters. The truth in the writing places the reader in the timeline of the Vietnam War. You feel everything. I highly recommend this book.

The story was written with a raw voice that made me respect the strength and mental capacity of those who managed to come home. The author brought out vivid scenes, minute details lost in the telling of history and impossible to capture on screen. There is a powerful message here. A voice that reminds us that a soldier is a man with a family, a mom, a desire to live. They are not weapons, they are flesh and bone and heart. I can't recommend it highly enough. Excellent work.
