From war veteran turned author Glyn Haynie, “The Tunnel” is an authentically crafted novella, a fictional account of a run-of-the-mill mission ordered for a squad of soldiers in the Vietnam War. But this mission leaves one of the soldiers with more questions than answers about loyalty and courage.
In 1969, Private Andy Carter served in the Quang Ngai Province of Vietnam with his brothers in arms; his friends and protectors. Any one of them would die for the others. But there is one in the team who is not trusted: relative newcomer Ramsey, a draftee, and former anti-war protestor. Ramsey believes they are on the wrong side and even appears to sympathize with the cause of their enemy, continually incurring the anger of his fellow soldiers.
When they are sent on what appears to be a routine recon mission to find a vast, suspected Viet Cong tunnel complex and command center, Carter suspects there may be more to it. To help in their task, they are accompanied by a highly valued asset, a different kind of soldier; a brave and highly trained German shepherd dog called Alice.
It is a mission that leaves Carter questioning the value of a soldier’s life, and perhaps even the madness that war creates . . .
